La scogliera che ti sovrasta

Quando è scesa abbastanza, Polly si accorge che al cielo è successo qualcosa di strano. Ce n'è di meno. Alza lo sguardo e trova la scogliera sospesa sopra la sua testa, più larga lassù che quaggiù, tanto che la città in cima è finita da qualche parte dietro e sopra di lei, del tutto fuori vista.

By the time she has gone far enough down, Polly notices that something strange has happened to the sky. There is less of it. She looks up and finds the cliff hanging out over her head, wider up there than it is down here, so that the town at the top is somewhere behind and above and completely out of sight.

È quello che il mare fa da moltissimo tempo. Le onde lavorano alla base di una scogliera e portano via la roccia da sotto, e la roccia di sopra, rimasta senza niente su cui poggiare, aspetta. Lungo questa costa il mare ha scavato vere e proprie grotte alla base delle scogliere, ampie bocche scure che inghiottono le onde e le restituiscono con un rimbombo che lei sente attraverso il gradino su cui è seduta.

This is what the sea has been doing for a very long time. Waves work at the bottom of a cliff and take the rock away from underneath, and the rock above, having nothing left to stand on, waits. Along this coast the sea has cut whole caves back into the base of the cliffs, wide dark mouths that swallow the swell and give it back with a boom she can feel through the step she is sitting on.

Sulle sporgenze sotto di lei ci sono uccelli verde scuro, in piedi con le ali aperte ad asciugarle al vento. Sono marangoni dal ciuffo, e su queste rocce nidificano in numeri che contano davvero. Quasi la metà di tutti i marangoni dal ciuffo che si riproducono nell'intero Mar Mediterraneo nidifica lungo questo tratto di costa e sulle isolette più al largo.

On the ledges below her there are dark green birds standing with their wings held open, drying them in the wind. They are shags, and they nest along these rocks in numbers that matter. Close to half of all the shags breeding in the whole Mediterranean Sea nest around this stretch of coast and the little islands beyond it.

Uno di loro si lascia cadere dalla sporgenza senza preavviso, si raccoglie ed entra in acqua così pulito che quasi non fa schizzi. Polly aspetta. Resta sotto a lungo. Quando riemerge è sorprendentemente lontano, e ha un pesce.

One of them drops off its ledge without warning, folds, and goes into the water so cleanly that it barely makes a splash. Polly waits. It is gone a long time. When it surfaces it is a surprising distance away, and it has a fish.
