머리 위로 기울어진 절벽

폴리는 더 아래로 내려가요. 그러다 이상한 것을 알아차려요. 하늘이 아까보다 적게 보여요. 폴리는 위를 올려다봐요. 절벽이 머리 위로 튀어나와 있어요. 절벽은 이 아래보다 위쪽이 더 넓어요. 이제 꼭대기에 있는 도시는 보이지 않아요.

Polly goes further down. Then she notices something strange. There is less sky than before. She looks up. The cliff hangs out over her head. It is wider up there than down here. The town at the top is out of sight now.

이것은 바다가 아주 오랜 시간 동안 천천히 만든 거예요. 파도가 절벽 아래쪽을 때리고 바위를 가져가요. 그러면 위에 있는 바위는 밑에 받쳐 줄 것이 없어요. 이 해안을 따라 바다는 절벽에 커다란 동굴들을 만들었어요. 파도가 동굴 안으로 들어가면, 폴리는 발밑의 돌을 통해 그 소리를 느껴요.

The sea did this, slowly, over a very long time. Waves hit the bottom of the cliff and take the rock away. Then the rock above has nothing to stand on. Along this coast the sea has made big caves in the cliffs. When a wave goes into a cave, Polly feels the sound through the stone under her feet.

아래쪽 바위 턱에 짙은 초록색 새들이 있어요. 새들은 바람에 날개를 말리려고 날개를 활짝 펴고 서 있어요. 이 새들은 유럽가마우지예요. 지중해 전체에 사는 유럽가마우지의 거의 절반이 이 해안과 저기 작은 섬들에 둥지를 지어요.

On the ledges below her there are dark green birds. They stand with their wings wide open to dry them in the wind. These birds are shags. Almost half of all the shags in the whole Mediterranean Sea nest along this coast and on the small islands out there.

갑자기 한 마리가 바위 턱에서 떨어져요. 새는 물속으로 들어가는데 물보라가 거의 없어요. 폴리는 기다려요. 새는 오랫동안 물속에 있어요. 다시 올라왔을 때 새는 멀리 있고, 물고기를 물고 있어요.

Suddenly one of them drops off its ledge. It falls into the water and makes almost no splash. Polly waits. The bird stays under a long time. When it comes up again it is far away, and it has a fish.
