다시 올라가는 길

맨 아래에 이르면 할 일은 하나뿐이다. 돌아서서 다시 올라가는 것. 오르막은 내리막보다 더디고 생각보다 훨씬 힘이 들어서, 폴리는 두 번 쉬어 가는데, 두 번 다 경치를 보려고 멈춘 척한다.

At the bottom there is nothing to do but turn around and climb back up. Going up is slower than coming down and takes rather more of her than she expected, and she stops twice, and pretends both times that she is stopping to look at the view.

젖은 아래쪽 계단 하나에 삿갓조개 한 마리가 돌의 얕게 팬 자리에 붙어 있다. 그 자리는 꼭 제 껍데기 모양인데, 여러 해 동안 같은 자리로 돌아와 몸으로 돌을 갈아 제 자리를 만들었기 때문이다. 삿갓조개는 밤이면 먹이를 찾아 나가 어둠 속을 조금 헤매다가, 아침마다 자기 말고는 아무에게도 맞지 않는 그 구멍으로 용케 집을 찾아 돌아온다.

On one of the wet lower steps there is a limpet, sitting in a shallow dip in the stone. The dip is the exact shape of its shell, because it has been coming back to that same spot for years and grinding itself a seat there. It goes out at night to eat, wanders a few steps in the dark, and every morning finds its way home to a hole that fits it and nothing else.

꼭대기에 다다르니 햇빛이 충분히 돌아와 해협에 떠 있는 섬들이 드러난다. 그곳은 전혀 다른 세계다. 이 절벽이 구멍과 동굴투성이인 창백한 석회암이라면, 저 섬들은 분홍빛 화강암이다. 거인이 두고 간 것처럼 거대하고 매끈한 바윗덩이들이 겹겹이 쌓여 있고, 그곳에는 믿기 어려울 만큼 많은 도마뱀이 산다.

From the top, the light has come round enough to show the islands out in the strait. They are a different world. Where this cliff is pale limestone full of holes and caves, those islands are pink granite, piled up in huge smooth boulders like something left behind by a giant, and lizards live out there in numbers you would not believe.

폴리는 벼랑 끝을 타고 올라오는 바람을 맞으며 성벽에 앉아, 바위에 파인 홈을 한 번 더 내려다본다. 이백 개 가까운 계단이 손으로 깎여, 절벽을 뚫고 차가운 물 한 잔까지 내려간다. 폴리는 해를 왼쪽에 두고 해안을 따라 북쪽으로 길을 떠난다.

Polly sits on the rampart with the wind coming up over the edge and looks down at the slot in the rock one more time. Nearly two hundred steps, hand cut, going down through a cliff to a cup of cold water. She sets off north along the coast with the sun on her left.
