İki Deniz Arasındaki Kule

Polly kasabaya geri döndü. Tepede, kilisenin yanında uzun bir çan kulesi var. Bu kule, Venedik'teki ünlü kulenin bir kopyası. Dört yüz yıldan uzun bir süre önce yapıldı.

Polly went back to town. On the hill stands a tall bell tower next to the church. It is a copy of the famous tower in Venice. It was built more than four hundred years ago.

İçeride yüz kırk altı tahta basamak var. Polly her basamağı sekerek çıktı. En üstte büyük çanlar asılıydı. Rüzgâr tuz kokuyordu.

Inside there are one hundred and forty-six wooden steps. Polly hopped up every step. At the top hung the big bells. The wind smelled of salt.

Kasaba altındaydı. Turuncu çatılar denize kadar iniyordu. Beyaz meydan küçük bir ay gibi parlıyordu. Bir yanda yalnızca mavi deniz vardı.

The town lay below her. Orange roofs ran down to the sea. The white square shone like a little moon. On one side there was only blue sea.

Öbür yanda, çok uzakta, tuzlalar beyaz beyaz parlıyordu. Bir yanda su, öbür yanda tuz. Martı haklıydı. Bu kasabayı tuz yaptı.

On the other side, far away, the salt pans shone white. Water on one side, salt on the other. The gull was right. Salt built this town.
