البرج بين بحرين

عادت بولي إلى البلدة. على التلّ يقف برج أجراس عالٍ بجانب الكنيسة. هو نسخة من البرج الشهير في البندقية. بُني قبل أكثر من أربعمئة عام.

Polly went back to town. On the hill stands a tall bell tower next to the church. It is a copy of the famous tower in Venice. It was built more than four hundred years ago.

في الداخل مئة وست وأربعون درجة خشبية. قفزت بولي على كلّ درجة. في الأعلى كانت الأجراس الكبيرة. كانت رائحة الريح رائحة الملح.

Inside there are one hundred and forty-six wooden steps. Polly hopped up every step. At the top hung the big bells. The wind smelled of salt.

كانت البلدة تحتها. نزلت السقوف البرتقالية إلى البحر. لمعت الساحة البيضاء مثل قمر صغير. على أحد الجانبين لم يكن إلا البحر الأزرق.

The town lay below her. Orange roofs ran down to the sea. The white square shone like a little moon. On one side there was only blue sea.

على الجانب الآخر، بعيدًا، لمعت الملّاحات بيضاء. الماء من جهة، والملح من الجهة الأخرى. كان النورس على حقّ. الملح بنى هذه البلدة.

On the other side, far away, the salt pans shone white. Water on one side, salt on the other. The gull was right. Salt built this town.
