하얀 물의 밭

폴리는 해안을 따라 남쪽으로 날았어요. 작은 강 옆에 평평한 땅이 있었어요. 바다 옆에 얕은 웅덩이가 수백 개 있었어요. 웅덩이마다 거울처럼 반짝였어요. 이곳은 세초블레 염전이에요. 사람들은 칠백 년도 더 전부터 여기서 소금을 만들었어요.

Polly flew south along the coast. By a small river, the land was flat. There were hundreds of shallow pools by the sea. Each pool shone like a mirror. These are the salt pans of Sečovlje. People have made salt here for more than seven hundred years.

바닷물이 웅덩이로 들어와요. 여름 내내 해가 물을 가져가요. 소금은 남아요. 폴리는 웅덩이에 들어갔어요. 물이 따뜻하고 짰어요.

Sea water comes into the pools. All summer the sun takes the water away. The salt stays. Polly walked into a pool. The water was warm and salty.

소금 일꾼들이 긴 나무 갈퀴로 물을 밀었어요. 하얀 소금이 작은 산이 되었어요. 옛날처럼 손으로 일해요.

The salt workers pushed long wooden rakes through the water. The white salt made small hills. They work by hand, like long ago.

일꾼 한 사람이 웅덩이 바닥을 보여 주었어요. 바닥은 피부처럼 검고 매끄러웠어요. 이 바닥이 진흙을 막아서 소금이 하얘요.

A worker showed her the floor of the pool. It was dark and smooth, like skin. It keeps the mud down, so the salt stays white.
