소금 한 알

마지막 날 아침, 폴리는 마을 끝까지 날아갔어요. 그곳 바닷가에 작은 하얀 등대가 있고, 그 옆에 둥근 성당이 있어요. 여기서 보니 마을이 다시 배 같았어요.

On her last morning, Polly flew to the end of the town. A small white lighthouse stands there by the sea, next to a round church. From here, the town looked like a ship again.

고깃배들이 한 척씩 항구를 떠났어요. 탑의 종이 지붕 위로 울렸어요. 광장에서는 바이올린을 든 남자가 첫 햇빛 속에 혼자 서 있었어요.

The fishing boats left the harbour one by one. The bell in the tower rang over the roofs. On the square, the man with the violin stood alone in the first light.

폴리는 아직 소금 한 알의 맛을 느꼈어요. 바다와 해와 끈기 있는 손이 그 소금을 만들었어요. 칠백 년도 넘게 같은 방법으로요. 이 하얀 마을은 소금이 지었어요.

Polly still tasted one grain of salt. Sea, sun and patient hands made it, the same way for more than seven hundred years. Salt built this white town.

폴리는 마을을 한 바퀴 돌았어요. 그리고 아침 바람을 타고 높이 날아올랐어요. 돌로 된 배가 뒤에서 작아졌어요. 앞의 바다는 넓고 밝았어요.

She flew once around the town. Then she rose on the morning wind. The stone ship grew small behind her. The sea in front of her was wide and bright.
