소금 한 알

마지막 날 아침, 폴리는 반도의 맨 끝, 마을의 땅이 다하는 곳까지 날아갔다. 그곳 오래된 방파제 위에는 작은 하얀 등대가 둥근 성당 곁에 서 있고, 파도가 돌 바로 앞까지 밀려온다. 곶 끝에서 보니 마을은 정말로 배 같았다. 종탑은 돛대, 지붕들은 짐, 그 전체가 아드리아해로 밀려 나가 항로를 지키고 있었다.

On her last morning Polly flew out to the very tip of the peninsula, where the town runs out of land. A small white lighthouse stands there on the old sea wall beside a round church, and the waves come right up to the stone. From the point the town really did look like a ship, the bell tower its mast, the roofs its cargo, the whole thing pushed out into the Adriatic and holding its course.

고깃배들이 한 척씩 작은 항구를 떠났다. 고요한 물 위에서 엔진이 낮게 웅얼거렸고, 배마다 뒤로 빛의 줄을 끌었다. 저 높이서 종탑의 종이 시각을 알렸고, 그 소리는 지붕들 위로 굴러 내려가 바다 너머로 퍼져 나갔다. 광장에서는 청동 바이올린 연주자가 하얀 돌 위에 홀로 서 있었고, 첫 햇살은 다른 무엇보다 먼저 그를 찾아냈다.

The fishing boats left the little harbour one by one, their engines a low murmur on the still water, each one trailing a line of light. Far above, the bell in the tower struck the hour and the sound rolled down over the roofs and out across the sea. In the square the bronze violinist stood alone on his white stone, and the first sun found him before it found anything else.

폴리의 혀에는 아직 소금 한 알의 맛이 남아 있었다. 아니, 남아 있는 것 같았는데, 그게 그거였다. 바다, 햇볕, 나무 갈퀴, 끈기 있는 손. 칠백 년이 넘도록 똑같은 조리법이었고, 그 수익으로 분홍빛과 황토빛 집들이 들어선 마을이 세워졌다. 빗물에 녹아 버리는 것으로 마을을 짓는다는 건 이상한 일이다. 그런데 그게 통했다는 건 더 이상한 일이다.

Polly still had the taste of a single grain of salt on her tongue, or thought she did, which came to the same thing. Sea, sun, wooden rakes and patient hands, the same recipe for more than seven hundred years, and a town of pink and ochre houses raised on the proceeds. It is a strange thing to build a town out of something that dissolves in the rain. It is stranger still that it worked.

폴리는 지붕 위를 낮게 날며 반도를 한 바퀴 돌았다. 레이스 같은 발코니와 사자의 닳은 발과 따뜻한 하얀 광장을 지나, 아침 바람을 타고 높이 날아올랐다. 뒤에서는 돌로 된 배가 점점 작아졌지만 꼼짝하지 않았다. 앞에는 바다가 활짝 열린 채 빛나고 있었고, 아주 희미하게 소금 맛이 났다.

She circled the peninsula once, low over the roofs, past the lace balconies and the lion's worn paw and the warm white square, and then rose on the morning wind. Behind her the stone ship grew smaller and did not move. Ahead of her the sea was open and shining, and it tasted, very faintly, of salt.
