再往下，台阶上还有别人。一只狐狸从下面走上来。她拿着一把尺子和一个笔记本。她每一级台阶都停下来量一量。波莉走到一边。

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

这些台阶是人用手凿的。没有两级是一样的。有的很高，有的很矮。

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

有意思的是：没有人知道一共有多少级台阶。一个办公室说一百八十七级。另一个办公室说一百八十九级。两个都是官方的。

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

波莉顺着长长的石阶往下看。她决定相信大的那个数。

Polly looks down the long line of stone. She decides to believe the bigger number.
