Nitko se ne slaže

Niže je na stubama još netko. Odozdo dolazi lisica. Ima metar i bilježnicu. Zastane na svakoj stubi i izmjeri je. Polly se makne u stranu.

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

Ove su stube usječene ručno. Nijedna stuba nije ista kao druga. Neke su visoke. Neke su vrlo niske.

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

Sada dolazi smiješan dio. Nitko ne zna koliko stuba ima. Jedan ured kaže sto osamdeset sedam. Drugi ured kaže sto osamdeset devet. Oba su službena.

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

Polly gleda niz dugu crtu kamena. Odluči vjerovati većem broju.

Polly looks down the long line of stone. She decides to believe the bigger number.
