더 아래쪽 계단에 누가 또 있어요. 여우 한 마리가 아래에서 올라와요. 여우는 자와 수첩을 가지고 있어요. 여우는 계단마다 멈춰서 높이를 재요. 폴리는 옆으로 비켜요.

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

이 계단은 손으로 만들었어요. 똑같은 계단은 하나도 없어요. 어떤 계단은 높아요. 어떤 계단은 아주 낮아요.

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

재미있는 것이 있어요. 계단이 몇 개인지 아무도 몰라요. 한 사무소는 백팔십칠 개라고 해요. 다른 사무소는 백팔십구 개라고 해요. 둘 다 공식 숫자예요.

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

폴리는 길게 이어진 돌계단을 내려다봐요. 폴리는 더 큰 숫자를 믿기로 해요.

Polly looks down the long line of stone. She decides to believe the bigger number.
