لا أحد يتفق

في الأسفل أكثر، هناك أحد آخر على الدرجات. ثعلبة تصعد من الأسفل. معها مسطرة ودفتر. تقف عند كل درجة وتقيسها. تتحرك بولي إلى جانب.

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

الدرجات محفورة باليد. لا توجد درجتان متشابهتان. بعضها عالٍ. وبعضها منخفض جدًا.

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

وهنا الجزء المضحك. لا أحد يعرف كم درجة هناك. مكتب يقول مئة وسبع وثمانون. ومكتب آخر يقول مئة وتسع وثمانون. الاثنان رسميان.

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

تنظر بولي إلى أسفل الخط الطويل من الحجر. تقرر أن تصدق العدد الأكبر.

Polly looks down the long line of stone. She decides to believe the bigger number.
