맨 아래의 물

계단의 마지막 부분은 달라요. 이제 바위가 젖어 있어요. 어둡고 차가워요. 맨 아래에 작은 동굴이 있어요.

The last part of the steps is different. The rock is wet now. It is dark and cold. At the bottom there is a small cave.

동굴 안에서 바위 사이로 민물이 나와요. 폴리는 물을 맛봐요. 차갑고 달아요. 바다가 바로 옆에 있지만 이 물은 짜지 않아요.

Inside the cave, fresh water comes out of the rock. Polly tastes it. It is cold and sweet. The sea is right there, but this water is not salty.

위에 있는 땅에 비가 와요. 거기 바위는 석회암이에요. 물이 바위 속으로 들어가요. 물은 돌 속으로 내려가서 여기로 나와요.

Rain falls on the land above. The rock up there is limestone. The water sinks into it. It travels down inside the stone and comes out here.

이제 폴리는 계단을 이해해요. 병사들이 하룻밤에 만든 것이 아니에요. 수도사들이 여러 해 동안 천천히 만들었어요. 수도사들은 이 물이 필요했어요.

Now Polly understands the steps. Soldiers did not make them in one night. Monks made them, slowly, for many years. They wanted this water.
