Вода внизу

Последняя часть лестницы другая. Теперь камень мокрый. Он тёмный и холодный. Внизу есть маленькая пещера.

The last part of the steps is different. The rock is wet now. It is dark and cold. At the bottom there is a small cave.

В пещере из камня течёт пресная вода. Полли пробует её. Вода холодная и вкусная. Море совсем рядом, но эта вода не солёная.

Inside the cave, fresh water comes out of the rock. Polly tastes it. It is cold and sweet. The sea is right there, but this water is not salty.

Наверху идёт дождь. Камень там из известняка. Вода уходит в камень. Она идёт вниз внутри камня и выходит здесь.

Rain falls on the land above. The rock up there is limestone. The water sinks into it. It travels down inside the stone and comes out here.

Теперь Полли понимает, зачем эти ступени. Их сделали не солдаты за одну ночь. Их сделали монахи, медленно, много лет. Им была нужна эта вода.

Now Polly understands the steps. Soldiers did not make them in one night. Monks made them, slowly, for many years. They wanted this water.
