Остання частина сходів інша. Тепер камінь мокрий. Він темний і холодний. Унизу є маленька печера.

The last part of the steps is different. The rock is wet now. It is dark and cold. At the bottom there is a small cave.

У печері зі скелі тече прісна вода. Поллі куштує її. Вона холодна й смачна. Море зовсім поруч, але ця вода не солона.

Inside the cave, fresh water comes out of the rock. Polly tastes it. It is cold and sweet. The sea is right there, but this water is not salty.

На землю нагорі падає дощ. Нагорі скеля з вапняку. Вода йде в камінь. Вона тече вниз усередині каменю і виходить тут.

Rain falls on the land above. The rock up there is limestone. The water sinks into it. It travels down inside the stone and comes out here.

Тепер Поллі розуміє сходи. Солдати не зробили їх за одну ніч. Їх зробили ченці, повільно, багато років. Вони хотіли цієї води.

Now Polly understands the steps. Soldiers did not make them in one night. Monks made them, slowly, for many years. They wanted this water.
