Ultima parte a treptelor e diferită. Acum stânca e udă. E întunecată și rece. Jos de tot e o peșteră mică.

The last part of the steps is different. The rock is wet now. It is dark and cold. At the bottom there is a small cave.

În peșteră, din stâncă iese apă dulce. Polly o gustă. E rece și dulce. Marea e chiar acolo, dar apa aceasta nu e sărată.

Inside the cave, fresh water comes out of the rock. Polly tastes it. It is cold and sweet. The sea is right there, but this water is not salty.

Ploaia cade pe pământul de sus. Stânca de acolo e calcar. Apa intră în ea. Coboară prin piatră și iese aici.

Rain falls on the land above. The rock up there is limestone. The water sinks into it. It travels down inside the stone and comes out here.

Acum Polly înțelege treptele. Nu soldații le-au făcut într-o noapte. Le-au făcut călugării, încet, mulți ani. Voiau apa aceasta.

Now Polly understands the steps. Soldiers did not make them in one night. Monks made them, slowly, for many years. They wanted this water.
