台阶的最后一段不一样。现在石头是湿的。这里又暗又冷。最下面有一个小洞。

The last part of the steps is different. The rock is wet now. It is dark and cold. At the bottom there is a small cave.

洞里，淡水从石头里流出来。波莉尝了尝。水很凉，也很甜。大海就在旁边，可是这水不咸。

Inside the cave, fresh water comes out of the rock. Polly tastes it. It is cold and sweet. The sea is right there, but this water is not salty.

雨落在上面的土地上。上面的石头是石灰岩。雨水渗进石头里。它在石头里往下走，从这里流出来。

Rain falls on the land above. The rock up there is limestone. The water sinks into it. It travels down inside the stone and comes out here.

现在波莉明白这些台阶了。不是士兵在一个晚上做的。是修士做的，他们慢慢地做了很多年。他们想要这里的水。

Now Polly understands the steps. Soldiers did not make them in one night. Monks made them, slowly, for many years. They wanted this water.
