La città sulla scogliera

Polly vola verso sud lungo la costa della Corsica. Poi l'isola finisce. Davanti a lei c'è solo il mare. Lontano vede un'altra isola.

Polly flies south along the coast of Corsica. Then the island ends. In front of her there is only sea. Far away she can see another island.

Polly si gira e vede una città. La città è su una scogliera alta e bianca. Le case sono alte e strette. Sono proprio sul bordo. Sotto le case, la scogliera scende tanto, fino al mare.

Polly turns and sees a town. The town stands on a high white cliff. The houses are tall and narrow. They stand right at the edge. Below them the cliff falls a long way down to the sea.

Polly si posa sulle vecchie mura della città e guarda giù. La roccia è bianca e secca. Sotto di lei volano i gabbiani. Poi vede una cosa strana. C'è una linea stretta tagliata nella scogliera. Dentro la linea ci sono dei gradini.

Polly lands on the old town wall and looks down. The rock is white and dry. Gulls fly below her. Then she sees something strange. There is a narrow line cut into the cliff. Inside the line there are steps.

I gradini scendono nel buio. Polly non vede dove finiscono. Polly andrà laggiù.

The steps go down into the dark. Polly cannot see the end of them. Polly will go down there.
