Orașul de pe faleză

Polly zboară spre sud, de-a lungul coastei Corsicii. Apoi insula se termină. În fața ei e doar mare. Departe, vede o altă insulă.

Polly flies south along the coast of Corsica. Then the island ends. In front of her there is only sea. Far away she can see another island.

Polly se întoarce și vede un oraș. Orașul stă pe o faleză albă și înaltă. Casele sunt înalte și înguste. Stau chiar pe margine. Sub ele, faleza coboară mult, până la mare.

Polly turns and sees a town. The town stands on a high white cliff. The houses are tall and narrow. They stand right at the edge. Below them the cliff falls a long way down to the sea.

Polly se așază pe vechiul zid al orașului și se uită în jos. Stânca e albă și uscată. Sub ea zboară pescăruși. Apoi vede ceva ciudat. În faleză e tăiată o linie îngustă. În linie sunt trepte.

Polly lands on the old town wall and looks down. The rock is white and dry. Gulls fly below her. Then she sees something strange. There is a narrow line cut into the cliff. Inside the line there are steps.

Treptele coboară în întuneric. Polly nu le vede capătul. Polly va coborî acolo.

The steps go down into the dark. Polly cannot see the end of them. Polly will go down there.
